Maasai Anglican Pastor and Parent Moses Ntuskosio, speaks on the Maasai belief that children are not considered part of the tribe until they are three years old, “The children are not ours, they belong to God. It is God who chooses if they remain. They are not part of the tribe until they are three,” though the age differs between the clans. One in eleven children die before their fifth birthday. Awareness is being raised through the mother and child outreach programs on sanitation and nutrition in areas where one third of children are stunted and suffer of chronic malnutrition. Hygiene related diseases are the number one cause of mortality between children under age five, this means they could be prevented with knowledge of basic hygiene and sanitation.
